Stock Market:
the economics of life
In fifth grade TAG, we will begin with a unit on the “Stock Market: Economics of Life,” which focuses on Higher Order/Critical Thinking and Advanced Communication Skills. In this unit, students will learn how to make informed financial decisions and will participate in The Stock Market Game, an online simulation of stock trading. Students will have hands-on opportunities to learn about money, personal finance, wealth building, and increase their knowledge of financial vocabulary. Life and Monopoly are great games to play at home during this unit. These games will offer students the opportunity to apply economic concepts to real life situations.
Each day, students will identify the Higher Order/Critical Thinking Skills used. These will include: asking complex questions, using criteria to make comparisons, using criteria to make decisions, using criteria to evaluate decisions, predicting consequences of decisions, using metaphors, examining an issue from various points of view, and drawing conclusions.
We look forward to a fun year in fifth grade TAG!

Pioneers of the 20th century
Fifth graders will be studying Famous Innovators of the Twentieth Century in the next Creative Problem Solving Unit. The purpose of this unit is to learn about how people succeeded as visionaries and reformers in a particular field during different time periods under a variety of circumstances. During this unit, students will investigate individuals who have made innovations in exploration, medicine, economics, politics, society, science, technology, and culture. As researchers and problem solvers, students will focus on different aspects of inquiry and create a variety of products and solutions.
Throughout this unit, students will examine how modern pioneers explored ancient mysteries and understand the challenges of exploring an uncharted frontier. They will learn about new opportunities women created for themselves during World War II and medical advancements that were made during that time period. TAG students will create products to demonstrate how culture in the U.S. is reflected through the arts from the Twentieth Century. Students will also investigate the history of different inventions and will create an invention of their own in order to solve a problem they encounter in their everyday lives.
Through investigating past and present, our TAG students will impact the future! If you have questions, please let us know! Please follow along with our journey at our TAG blog, http://mbestag.weebly.com/
