Dropping our postcard to our friends in the United Kingdom off at the school mailbox! Using our graphic organizers, we created a quadruple Venn diagram to compare and contrast the four people groups of the Arctic that we studied. The students used nonfiction texts to find evidence for comparisons and differences beyond what we recorded on our graphic organizers. The students created Inuit inspired masks. We compiled articles and puzzles made by the students to create a class magazine. Students wrote and typed their own work. They also created the idea to number the Table of Contents, the fonts, and pictures. We hope you enjoy this awesome magazine!!

Students have been flexing their higher order thinking skills to learn about the Arctic people groups. After learning about four different peoples, students are creating an Arctic magazine. Their articles (many typed BY THE STUDENTS!!) will be compiled along with puzzles created. Copies will be sent home with each student! First graders are learning Microsoft Word and typing skills! They created their articles and included typing the information they researched, finding a picture online, and learning how to edit and change font, size, and letter styling.
Today Mr. Mike Mullet shared his expertise with us. Mr. Mullet is the President of Laser Aviation, and he is also a pilot in the Civil Air Patrol, which is the United States Air Force Auxilary. http://www.gocivilairpatrol.com/ After high school, he joined the US Army and served as a helicopter crew chief in Germany and Vietnam. Following his military service, he obtained his Private Pilot Certificate in 1977 and obtained an instrument endorsement in 2011 following his military service. He continues to maintain his certificate and is qualified as a Mission Pilot and Mission Check Pilot for the Civil Air Patrol in GA, with the Peachtree DeKalb Senior Squadron at DeKalb Peachtree Airport. He flies about 150 hours each year to keep current. He also received an Aircraft Dispatchers Certificate in 2009, and is currently working towards his Commercial endorsement. His passion for service and flying was incredibly evident! From our reporter, Wilson: Today, Mr. Mullet came to Medlock Bridge Elementary School to teach us about aviation and the important things about flying, like planning for flight. Mr. Mullet was a civil air patrol cadet and he told us that civil air patrol rescues people, and flies to a crash plane site to try to get people out who were hurt or injured. He also told us all about airplane controls and what is in an airplane to make us feel like we feel and some personal things about him, too. Mr. Mullet brought in aviation magazines and an aeronautical map for our class to keep! He also brought in all the item he brings into the cockpit with him, answering more questions that students had listed on their pretests. Mr. Mullet also shared about the controls in the cockpit, which was another question that many students had. So many controls!
Students were working hard to research different groups that work to conserve and preserve Georgia's natural resources! They created newsletters about each organization using Microsoft Publisher. Students loved the capabilities of the program and look forward to using it more to communicate their learning! Kevin researches using my iPad. ***We are always looking for more technology if you have any unwanted desktops or laptops to donate!! Ren and Tejesh researching together! The students collaborated well to make newsletters. They will be compiled as a class and sent home to share!

He is a wealth of knowledge and experience! He shared some actual footage from expeditions in the South Pole during his time in the Navy. Mr. O'Neil offered some amazing insight to answer our essential questions for the unit, "How has flight impacted the US economy and culture?" We appreciated his research to prepare for our class as well! About Tom: Tom is a thirteen year Delta Airlines pilot and currently serves as a First Officer on the MD-88/MD-90 aircraft. He is Atlanta based and flies throughout the United States, Mexico, Caribbean and Central America. His aircraft carries up to 160 passengers. Prior to Delta, he served for thirteen years in The United States Navy where he flew LC-130 Ski-Equipped C-130's in the Antarctic and E-6A/B Strategic Communications aircraft throughout the Pacific Theater of operations. He has approximately 10,000 total flight hours in the past 25 years, and has served as a military instructor pilot, Aircraft Commander, Mission Commander and Airline Pilot. He has flown the following Aircraft: Beech T-34C Turbo Mentor, Beech T-44A Pegasus, Lockheed LC-130 Hercules, Sikorsky UH-1N Iroquois, Boeing 707-320, Boeing 737-200, Boeing E-6A/B, McDonald Douglas MD--88, McDonald Douglas MD-90. He holds an Airline Transport Pilot Rating. Mr. O'Neil shared his commercial and military experience!
Throwing paper airplanes at school?? Who said school can't be fun?! Today we completed experiments to test various theories. Initial testing rounds began in the classroom. How does are throw, angle, flaps, and weight affect the distance? 3, 2, 1 - Release! Our experiments were controlled with release, retrieve, and monitored for unauthorized flight attempts. Next we took it outside to test after a few students' airplanes kept hitting the wall!! Next week we will continue our investigations by adding more flaps, rudders, and testing weights and locations! We also learned about Charles Lindbergh and his multiple failures in his pursuit to make history! We loved see his multiple experiments, his courage, and his risk-taking finally pay off! **Check back for our student reporters who will share the experience more in depth! Students generated lots of interesting questions for our expert. Today we skyped with Wesley Hester, a search and rescue pilot from the US Coast Guard. He was incredibly knowledgeable! Based on our pretests, I noticed that the kids had a ton of questions surrounding actual flight and the cockpit. Mr. Hester shared a ton about flight plans, which is super helpful based on Andorania, our fictional continent flight race. The students were able to ask questions about keeping the plane in the air, fears, and how to become a pilot. We are SO grateful for Mr. Hester's time!!
Mr. Mike Mullet will be joining our Thursday class on 9/26. After reviewing our pretests, many students wanted to know about the controls inside the cockpit and actual flying. Mr. Mullet has requested that we complete some research using the following website:
